Lim HongZhuang (38) from Singapore explains how adjusting his mindset and reviewing his diet helped him lose weight and become a healthier, stronger father to his children.
I have been trying for the longest time not to think about my weight gain. I refused to step on the scale and face the reality that I was obese. My daily lethargy stemmed from the fact that my food intake was far overboard, at irregular hours, and I always ate processed food just because it was convenient.
It took me over five years to realize that when I saw my kids play one day, I was not that mobile and was easily out of breath. I realized the best thing I can ever give my kids is not to tax them as they grow up. That means I have to stay healthy and be mobile for as long as I can physically. I started reading about metabolic diseases, which is something that creeps up on anyone. That was when I decided to take my body and mind back and sign up at Ultimate achievement.
During the transformation, I exercised three times a week and did composite exercises with high repetition that helped to reduce body fat in an effective way. I reckon with any modern knowledge worker scheduling is definitely a serious issue. I did have a problem setting up training three times a week with the demands of my role as a CEO. But after joining, the next step was to apply.
I played sports when I was younger, and had done cardio before, but had no experience in weights or resistance training before that. I learned a lot from my trainer Gabriel, from diet and what foods to eat, to techniques to stay sage while picking up heavy volume. But I think the most important lesson he taught me was not to compare myself to others, and to focus on my own results. It sounds like a cliché because you hear it so much, but focusing on myself, both mentally and physically, was one of the key lessons I took from this whole experience.
In addition to being committed and consistent, marital support was the most important factor. As a family we are big for food, but as both of us underwent the transformation, it was more encouraging that we not only started to change the way we eat and the eating grids, but we started to grow closer to each other with our children about what they will eat. Eating clean does not have to be boring or tasteless. Together we have made significant changes to the diet of our entire family and this has brought us closer together during the process.
I’ve never done a death knell before I came to Ultimate Performance, not even when I grew up with sports. In six months I achieved a PR of 90 kg (198 pounds), and recently I was able to do six repetitions at 100 kg (220 pounds).
In the same period, I lost about 30 kg (66 pounds) and went from 34.4 percent body fat to 10.6 percent body fat. I also gained about 2 kg (4.4 pounds) of lean body mass. The most hilarious part of my transformation was that I had to get workout clothes while losing all that weight, and the only things I could find that fit were the PE clothes I wore to school more than 20 years ago.
I feel that one of the most important qualities a man can have is his focus. Focus creates drive and motivation. The mind that was practiced during each exercise to turn on and off helped me to do the same at home. To focus on being a husband, father and son.
Once you take care of your body, you will naturally take care of yourself in most aspects of your life. I have more energy for my kids, put them on my shoulders to add weight to clock my steps, and I have become more focused on ensuring my business maintains the rate to thrive going forward. My relationship with everyone at home has improved, especially with my wife who has seen that drastic change in me.
Another very positive side effect is that I am now very consistent with my life. I wake up early these days at 4am to make sure my steps and morning exercise are done, to make sure I am focused on what is coming in the day. This is the best advice I can give to anyone who is at the beginning of their own fitness journey: be consistent and trust the journey.
