- Jamie Lee Curtis has just recounted the most empowering scene of her career.
- She said in a recent interview she felt the worst during her striptease in the 1994 film True lies.
- “It was a powerful experience for which no one else could take credit,” she explained.
In our eyes, Jamie Lee Curtis is, was and will always be a bad * ss. Her acting abilities and overall personal coolness reach far and wide, but in a new setting for In style, the 63-year-old revealed that she believes her personal best moment of bad * series (at least on set).
You probably know the movie. In the 1994 action comedy True lies in which she interprets alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger, Curtis’ character Helen Tasker perform a strip dance for her husband — something completely out of her element. Curtis may have been nervous about pulling it off, but she executed it flawlessly (without a rehearsal!) By finding the perfect balance between clumsy comic relief and total sex appeal.
“It was very early in the shooting schedule, which made me a little anxious, because it meant I had to stop eating whatever the fuck I was eating and maybe do some sit-ups, but I did not. had no time. . There was no choreographer, and we only rehearsed it in the sense that we were made aware of the camera placement and marks to hit, ”she explained.
Dancing on John Hiatt’s “Alone in the Dark,” she just went for it – peeling off and stepping out of her little black dress. “There was a moment when I closed my eyes and let it all go, and there was pin-drop silence afterwards,” she recalls. “It was a powerful experience that no one else could take credit for – it was just me, the music, three cameras and about 100 guys.”
In an industry that at the time valued her only in little-to-no clothes, the Knives out star could have been upset by the scene (and rightly so). But rather, she chose to make it hair. And at one point, the moment even became a little “too sexy” for director James Cameron, Curtis recall.
She grabbed the bedpost like a dance partner and really got into the moment. And the movements became almost too convincing to match her character’s detachment. “[Cameron] came to me and whispered in my ear: ‘Will you leave the pole?’ ”says Curtis. “He understood that Helen, who stumbled into her seductive dance, would remind everyone that it was a comedy after all.”
In the scene, she suddenly falls to the floor and — as if bouncing from it — jumps back and continues dancing as if nothing had happened. “It will always be the biggest single laugh I will ever get in my life,” Curtis said.
In a June 2021 interview with People, the Halloween kills actress remembered watching the movie premiere in a full theater — including, wrong, her father, sitting next to her. “Thousands of people — and you know, it’s very quiet during that series, because it’s a little sexy. Then when [Helen] fall and then get up again, oh my god, ”she recalls. The fall broke the silence.
This is a moment she — and everyone who watched — will never forget.
