Netflix just set the premiere date for Disenchantment, an upcoming animated series executive produced by Matt Groening. This will be the first new show from Groening, who created The Simpsons as well as Futurama, in nearly 20 years. From the sounds of it, the new series will be smart, funny, and a whole lot of weird. We can not wait.
Disenchantment is produced by ULULU on behalf of Netflix and the first 10 episodes will be released on August 17th. The series will follow the exploits of Princess Bean, a huge lush who travels around with her friend Elfo, the elf, and her own personal demon named Luci. Set in a fictional medieval kingdom called Dreamland, Princess Bean and her pals will navigate a world filled with ogres, trolls, and of course ridiculous human beings.
Abbi Jacobson, of Broad city fame, will be voicing Princess Bean while comedian and all around weirdo Eric Andre will voice Luci. Both actors have worked with Groening in the past. Rough Draft Studios, the same folks who worked on Futuramawill be handling the animation for Disenchantment.
The Simpsons, the 29th season of which just wrapped on Fox, has definitely stumbled in the latter half of its run, is still one of the most groundbreaking and impactful television shows ever created. Here’s hoping Disenchantment is a worthy suitor. We’ll find out when it hits Netflix on August 17th.
