The following story contains treats for Episode 4 of The book by Boba Fett, “The Gathering Storm.”
We are all in Star Wars (and the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and anything similarly created) first for the individual stories, but it would be a lie to say that the ways in which different chapters and projects intersect in those shared universes do not always have a bit of an adrenaline rush did not give. The first two seasons of The Mandalorian, the first Star Wars live action series that hit Disney + was great because it was a relatively classic and basic story: an unwilling guardian tasked with bringing a vulnerable-but-important creature to an end.
But where the program really got fans excited was the way it blended in with the bigger, decades-and-decades-in-becoming Star Wars universe. This, of course, culminated at the end of Season 2 with an epic Luke Skywalker comedy, but also remember that the show revived for the first time since fan’s favorite bounty hunter B0ba Fett. Return of the Jedi also in season 2. And now, quite unexpectedly, The book by Boba Fett apparently giving back the favor, as Episode 4, “The Gathering Storm,” apparently ends with a strong tease that Pedro Pascal’s Din Djarin— “Mando” —can return. And if not him, someone else we’ve seen in The Mandalorian before.
This is an interesting prospect to think about, because while we do have every story in the Star Wars, or Marvel Cinematic Universe, or DCEU worlds stand on their own without the help of linked, fan-favorite characters, it can be argued that this Boba Fett connection is an exception; The book by Boba Fett is essentially a Mandalorian spin-off, and both performances were written by Jon Favreau. It’s essentially the same creator who plays with all the toys in his sandbox, and therefore does not feel cheap or undeserved. We’ll see how it all plays out, but for now it feels like a strong turnaround for a series that was probably a little slower than some might have expected – and a little energy from fans’ favorite characters would not be a bad thing. thing be.
Will Mando (Pedro Pascal) be in The book by Boba Fett?
If you were hoping for a Din Djarin appearance in The book by Boba Fett, Episode 4 was probably a rollercoaster of emotions. The flashback episode of the episode – which took up most of our playing time – took place mostly simultaneously with the events of season 1 and 2 of The Mandalorian. Early in the episode, we saw the moment where Boba Fett found Fennec Shand’s body left for dead, and she decided to bring her to the space surgeon / mechanic / tattoo artist (played by Thundercat) to save . Of course, this all happened while Mando was hanging out with our 50-year-old friend Baby Yoda.
While this flashback showed us the formation and roots of the Boba / Fennec partnership (he sees himself in her; he was also left for dead in the desert, only he was in the digesting stomach / teeth of a sand animal, while she just was left in the sand), it also took us past all the events of Mandalorian Season 2, when Boba and Fennec met Mando, Grogu and friends. The episode jumps past it all and probably makes viewers think in real time to give up to see any Mandalorian friends. (In retrospect, it makes sense that we did not see any of this – we already saw it in Season 2 of The Mandalorian!)
But the end of the episode changes that. After a meeting with fellow crime leaders (including the Black Krrsantan, now on Boba’s side) about the upcoming conflict with the Pyke Syndicate, Boba expresses concern. Fennec has a solution – how many credits does Boba Fett have in his name? Boba is not worried about credits, but he needs muscle. But this is when Fennec drops the hammer: those credits can buy all the muscle he needs. Suddenly – your ears did not mistake you – Ludwig Göransson’s ever famous Mandalorian theme music begins, and the camera turns off and the episode ends.
It’s not a 100% guarantee, but it’s about as close as we’re going to get; The book by Boba Fett and The Mandalorian is on a road trip to cross town, honey!
What is Mando doing anyway?
Oh yeah, let’s think back to that Mandalorian Season 2 finals. What we all remember of course is that Luke Skywalker showed up and took Baby Yoda away to hone his powers with some special Jedi training. Heartbreaking, yes. We all cried, let’s just move past it.
What may not be quite as fresh in your mind is that Season 2 Mandalorian finale also resolved the conflict of the Darksaber. By defeating Moff Gideon and winning the Darksaber for himself, Mando became the reluctant leader of all Mandalore.
This created immediate conflict, because earning the Darksaber and becoming the leader of Mandalore was literally the exact goal that Bo-Katan came up with with the intention of completing. Uh Oh.
As it is now clear that Boba and Fennec will reunite with Mando in the coming weeks, we will see what he has been up to since Luke took his friend away. Does he embrace his new role as leader of all those Mandalorians? Or is he doing the Aragorn thing, living a quiet life of low-input jobs, favoritism, and not fulfilling potential (or probable prophecies, to be honest)? So much remains to be seen — but heaven forbid George Lucas, we’re excited to see it.
