During the next episode of the ABC’s The Goldbergs, actor Rick Moranis will momentarily peak his head out of retirement to reprise his legendary role as Dark Helmet in the in the 1987 Star Wars parody, Spaceballs. Though Moranis is only lending his voice to the show, we’re rejoicing about his return.
Moranis was was ever-present in the late eighties and early nineties. Well known for such films as Spaceballs, Honey I Shrunk the Kids, and Ghostbustersstepped out of the spotlight in 1991 after his wife tragically died of breast cancer. More concerned about being a present father to his two sons, Moranis eventually decided to retire from film.
In The Goldbergs, Moranis’ voice will only be used in one scene, but it’ll be used to reprise the role of Dark Helmet, the large helmeted Darth Vader parody so we’re excited. So, too are the show’s creators.
“I truly think Rick Moranis gave the most underrated and brilliant comedic performance in any ’80s movie as Dark Helmet,” Goldbergs creator Adam F. Goldberg told USA Today. “I’ve been a lifelong fan of his work and became obsessed with having him reprise the role on my show. As an added bonus, maybe this even gets Spaceballs back in the conversation, and I can get my dream of helping make a sequel! ”
Even though it will be a lot of fun to hear from Moranis again, do not bet on an illustrious return to acting for the’s star. Take what you can get and be happy about it. Goldberg allegedly “worked for several weeks,” to get Moranis to appear for just one scene in the show. In any case, you can hear his voice again on May 9th when the episode drops.
