With all the talk about Hulu’s Pam and Tommy, one particular moment makes viewers either laugh, scratch their heads or hold on to their pearls. The scene in question, inspired by Tommy Lee’s 2004 memoir Tommieland, features Sebastian Stan as Lee leading a healthy debate with his sensitive penis. (But truly, if you hold your pearls about it, wait until you find out what the rest of the limited series is about.)
While the talking attachment may seem shockingly real on screen, the scene was acquired by a puppet-like animatronic penis. And the story behind how the sausage was made, if you will, is worth telling.
“It’s not really Sebastian Stan’s dick,” showrunner Rob Siegel recently said Entertainment Weekly. “If we show full-frontal male nudity, it would be a different matter, but it’s almost so stupid that it might make it less [of an issue]. I can not think of a more fun and cuddly way to get away with extensive full-frontal male nudity. It’s a puppet, it’s like Yoda. “
According to a recent GQ VK interview with special effects makeup artist Jason Collins, the talking penis is made from an actual cast of Sebastian Stan’s junk.
“It was made of silicone and involved casting Sebastian’s life so that we could then form the appropriate size and blending points,” Collins told the magazine. “Once we finished sculpting, another mold was made and we poured it out of a plasticized silicone. The silicone is medical grade and gives the attachment a lifelike fleshy quality.”
To get a seamless look that makes it look like Stan is standing naked and not with a puppet hanging from his member, the SFX team used a lot of glue (ouch) and paint to attach the attachment and to mix. Just imagine yourself in this position:
“We adapt the piece by letting the actor ‘saddle up’ himself like a sleeve in the device. We then glue it in place and paint it with pure waxes of color, including pottery, “Collins told GQ UK.” All modesty is out the door in these scenarios and we quickly become personal friends when you are in those positions. . “
Stan deserves whatever kind of awards they hand out for that one. And, according to its sounds, so does the puppeteer who has quite the task of controlling Tommy’s sensitive penis.
“There were wires running from behind between his legs, and a guy crouched with joysticks on the floor and mechanically controlled what was going on,” showrunner DV DeVincentis said Entertainment Weekly. “That animatronic guy had to look in a mirror and kind of really act physically with Sebastian, like all the gestures and the nods and looks up, and we actually had to direct it. I’ve never done anything like that.”
Now just imagine the mailing list for that performance …
