Cobra Kaithe sort-of sequel to the 1980s hit movie The Karate Kidhas been one of the breakout TV hits of 2018. Now the popular web series has a chance to prove it’s no one-hit wonder ⏤ YouTube Red officially renewed it for a second season.
Set 30 years after the events of the Karate Kid, the show revisits life-long rivals Johnny Lawrence and Daniel LaRusso as two middle-aged men. And, get this, once again they’s brought together to battle it out at the Cobra Kai dojo. Except this time, of course, they aren’t the ones fighting. They’re now Mr. Miyaki and Sensei Kreese, having taken on the mentor roles in a classic showdown that comes to a head at another karate tournament. Because old habits die hard.
The show has been an undeniable hit for YouTube Red and the streaming service reported more than 20 million people watched Cobra Kai‘s first episode. The show has also experienced tremendous critical acclaim since its release earlier this month and boasts a perfect 100 percent fresh approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics praise its fresh take on a beloved franchise.
“This series had all of the right elements from the very beginning ⏤ compelling characters, a storied rivalry and the talented original stars,” said Susanne Daniels, YouTube’s global head of original content, in a statement. “The way viewers have embraced the new twist on this beloved franchise has been nothing short of amazing.”
Not much is currently known about Cobra Kai‘s second season plot beyond the fact that it will exist. However, it has been reported that the new season will begin filming this year and will be released sometime in 2019. And as long as it features Johnny and Daniel engaging in a constant battle of one-upmanship, you can count us in.
